What Is an Intrinsically Safe Barrier?

Simply put, an intrinsically safe barrier is a piece of isolation equipment that is used to protect electrical devices in hazardous environments. It preserves devices from power surges, eliminating the risk of an electrical device becoming a source of ignition when nearby explosive gases are present. An intrinsically safe barrier can also be referred to as Galvanic isolation.

How Does an Intrinsically Safe Barrier Work?

The isolation barrier divides two electrical circuits when there is no stream of electrons, achieving separation between input and output. It is placed between two systems, which allows it to pull out any power surges and landing issues. Without an isolation barrier, the two systems would split bases due to the power flowing between them. However, with an isolation barrier, power is barred from flowing between them.
